Sicko

I haven't seen the movie - although it is sitting on my coffee table, and I might watch it tonight.

Do you hear stories about how messed up the medical system can sometimes be down here in the USA? I've actually had no real MAJOR multi-million dollar issues with it...yet. Every country has it's issues I suppose.

In Canada - it doesn't matter if you have a job or not. No matter what - you are covered. My fees for Universal Healthcare up there was $10/month. As a Married person - you would pay no more than $50/month. If you lose your job - no worries - you are still insured as an individual...you can go to ANY Doctor - anytime, anywhere. You'd only need referrals for specialists after you see your regular GP.

I found out today that my new company's medical insurance will start covering me after Feb 1, 2009. My current company will terminate my insurance benefits on Dec 31, 2008.

30 days of no Medical Insurance....do we risk it - OR - do we pay $845 to cover both of us for the potential need for the month?

With my job being so hands-on - I need to consider that I might get a dog bite, cat bite or cat scratch - possibly requiring bandages, sutures, IV fluids & antibiotics....then there is the other fun stuff that comes along with zoonotic diseases....hmmmm what do we do?

Live on the wild side and go uninsured for the 30 days....or take out a loan and pay the $845 that we don't have.

You may need to give a definition on 'zoonotic' for all the lay people out there.

I think you should write a letter to the Governator.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The simplest definition of a zoonosis is a disease that can be transmitted from other vertebrate animals to humans.

A slightly more technical definition is a disease that normally exists in other animals, but also infects humans.

Hmmmm, well I am surprised that your current company does not offer benefits you can purchase at a lower rate than $845, but that may be the going rate. It's ridiculous isn't it? And we wonder why no one can afford healthcare!! :( If it were me, I would probably gamble and save the $845 for IF I needed it and then use it if I had a need (if not, think of the money you will have saved!) of course it is scary to not be insured. Does the Animal Hospital have some type of coverage for if you get bit it is covered by them...maybe?!
